It's an ultra-sharp lens that sells for $598 new. Sales end when sold out, or at Midnight NYC time (9PM west coast): $50 Off: ZEISS 10×25 Terra TL Compact Binoculars: $249. If you don't already own any of the others and aren't as cheap as I am, this 100-500mm lens is superb if the 100-500mm range is what you want on mirrorless, and it does weigh less than my favorite EF 100-400mm L IS II - and the RF 100-400mm IS USM takes the same pictures as any of these.Ġ2 August 2022, Tuesday $20 Off: Nikon Z 28mm f/2.8: $276.95.

Since I already own the fully professional all-metal, fluorite-element EF 100-400mm L IS II, I can't see any reason for this more expensive lens that won't work on my DSLRs or with my EF extenders.ĭon't let me stop you, however. Unlike with DSLRs, mirrorless cameras work brilliantly with extenders, and I often stack my EF 1.4 and 2x converters with my EF 100-400mm L IS II to get to an easy hand-holdable 1,120mm - which I can't do with the RF 100-500mm L IS.
This big baby is by far the most expensive lens here, but has (to me) a deal-breaking flaw where it can't be set to shorter than 300mm when used with an extender. I don't see any practical reason for the much larger and more expensive Canon RF 100-500mm L IS unless you prefer to carry huge lenses around all day. It won't work on DSLRs, but it is compact, inexpensive, ultra-sharp and autofocuses ultra fast and close. This little gem is the best choice for mirrorless. This EF lens works great on mirrorless and DSLRs and 35mm cameras. This is my favorite tele zoom of all time, and prefer it to the Canon RF 100-500mm L IS because the 100-400mm L IS II is better made and less expensive, and works much better with (even stacked) teleconverters.

However, if you don't mind a push-pull zoom and don't depend on IS as I do, it's just as sharp as the newer lenses and a steal for about $650 used if you know How to Win at eBay.Ĭanon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS II USM. It was state-of-the-art at the time, but long past its prime. It has superb fluorite optics, but its IS system is ancient and its push-pull zoom make it a pain to shoot.
